Framework

Different frameworks can help you craft effective prompts for generative AI tools. These frameworks provide guidelines on what elements to include in a prompt to get the best results. A good prompt typically contains these core elements:

Tell the model which role it should take on. By assigning a clear role such as expert, teacher, advisor, or copywriter, you guide the tone, style, and content of the responses.

Examples

  • ‘Take on the role of an expert science teacher.’
  • ‘Act as someone with years of experience in creative brainstorming.’
  • ‘You are a specialist with 20 years of experience in…’

Tips

  • Always start a new chat if you want the model to adopt a different role.
  • Consider the NOT role as well. What perspective should the model avoid? For example: ‘You are specialized in… That is the only area you know anything about. For all other questions, respond that it is outside your expertise. Keep this in mind for every question I ask.’

Give GenAI clear and specific instructions about what you want. The more precise you are, the more accurate the result will be.

Examples

  • ‘Help me create a presentation on…’
  • ‘Translate this text into English.’
  • ‘Draft a step-by-step plan for…’
  • ‘Come up with a research question for…’
  • ‘Add emojis to the following text: …’
  • ‘Compare the features of these products: …’
  • ‘Rewrite the text for …’

Provide enough background information so GenAI understands exactly what is needed. This helps to keep the output relevant and on target, like details about yourself, your project, or the characteristics of your audience.

Examples

  • ‘I want to create a structure for a presentation on climate change. The assignment is for a course in climate journalism and is aimed at 19-year-old students.’
  • ‘I am looking for locations in Ghent that are accessible to people with limited mobility for a day trip.’

Tell the model how you want the response to be delivered, or give an example.

Examples

  • ‘in a maximum of 500 words’, ‘divided into three paragraphs’, ‘a 2-minute video script’, ‘a 10-slide presentation’, ‘a 5-minute speech’
  • ‘in a table with three columns’
  • ‘in a list with five bullet points’
  • ‘in Dutch’

Tips

Ask the model to write or rewrite the text in a specific tone, such as: ‘Use an informal and friendly tone’, ‘Rewrite the text in a playful way’, or ‘Make this email more formal’.

Do you want the language model to match your writing style? First, ask for an analysis of a text you have written. Request feedback on the writing style and tone. Then, tell the model to use those characteristics in your next prompt.
